Labour Councillors slammed for trying to pass ULEZ costs to Watford residents
The Liberal Democrat group on Watford Council submitted a motion calling on Sadiq Khan to extend his scrappage scheme to Watford and rezone Watford stations into zone 6 to reduce the cost of public transport. This followed on from a letter where Mayor Peter Taylor expressed his concerns on the speed of the ULEZ roll out.
In his letter, Mayor Taylor highlighted that Watford residents pay into TfL’s budget through fares but will not benefit from the scrappage scheme that is proposed for people in London. Shockingly, the Labour group on Watford Borough Council proposed an amendment that would force taxpayers in Watford to pay for the consequences of the ULEZ charge.
Elected Mayor of Watford Peter Taylor said:
“Residents in Watford will be absolutely flabbergasted that Labour want them to cover the cost of their rushed ULEZ expansion. They already pay into TfL’s budget through fares and will get noting back through the scrappage scheme. Why should they pay twice?”
“Labour had a chance tonight to back local residents and stand up to their own party. Instead they tried to make a bad Labour policy even worse. They cannot be trusted to stand up for Watford.”
