Make school uniforms cheaper, say Lib Dems
Elected Mayor of Watford Peter Taylor wrote to the Leader of Hertfordshire County Council to press for action to reduce the cost of school uniforms in the wake of the cost of living crisis.
Last year the government released school uniform guidance for schools requiring them to keep costs down by taking steps to remove unnecessary branded items and allowing more high street options.
The Liberal Democrat Mayor of Watford is calling on Hertfordshire County Council, the education authority locally, to work proactively with schools to make sure that they are following this guidance and keeping school uniform costs as low as possible.
Peter said:
“With the cost of living emergency putting huge pressure on family budgets, it is essential that action is taken on the cost of school uniforms.
“I know from speaking to parents that many of them struggle every year with the excessive cost of school uniforms. With the cost of living crisis, this cost could push many more families into serious financial difficulty.
“In Watford, community groups such as Meriden Community Centre, have organised events to pass on previously worn school uniforms free of charge to those who need them. This has been a lifeline for many families. However, Hertfordshire County Council must make sure that every school is following new rules to make uniforms affordable.
