Watford Lib Dems Call for Increased Train Capacity After 50% Rise in Overcrowded Trains

The Watford Liberal Democrats have called for increased capacity on train services that call at Watford stations, following a 50% rise in short-formed trains since August 2024. This significant increase has led to frequent reports of residents being unable to board due to overcrowded services.
These concerns have been raised during ongoing meetings between Watford Mayor Peter Taylor, Councillor Ian Stotesbury, and representatives from London Northwestern Railway (LNWR). In a recent meeting, LNWR officials promised the introduction of newer, larger trains and increased capacity on services between Watford and London Euston. These improvements are set to include the arrival of new Class 350 trains in Autumn 2025, which are expected to help ease the current strain on the network.
The Watford Liberal Democrats have long advocated for more reliable and affordable public transport for local residents. They have consistently highlighted the need for accessible services that people can depend on to get to work, school, and daily activities.
Peter Taylor, candidate for Central Watford and Oxhey, emphasised the frustration many residents have expressed regarding overcrowded services. He said: “Countless residents have voiced how frustrating it is when a short train pulls into a busy platform, leaving people crammed in or unable to board at all. These services are vital for getting to work, school, and going about daily life.
“Commuters deserve a service that’s reliable and fit for purpose. The rise in short-formed trains over the past six months is unacceptable and I’ve raised this directly with LNWR. We’re continuing to push for better, more reliable train services at both Watford Junction and Bushey stations.”
