Six years ago, Liberal Democrat Tudor ward councillor Dareen Walford started this now annual effort after he saw these outside Northampton Town Hall. Since then, other he has encouraged other councillors to follow suit, and joined by residents, many of Watford's roads are now adorned with red poppies. Several thousand street lamppost or poles will be displaying these over the next few weeks prior to Remembrance Sunday.
Further remembrance items have been added recently with councillors using their locality or Neighbourhood Funds to purchase "Tommies" silhouettes and this year for the first time some Remembrance Benches have been installed at Tudor Parade funded by Tudor councillors.
Deputy Mayor Aga Dychton, who led one of the popppy teams said, "It is so pleasing to see so many of my fellow councillors getting involved in a positive way remembering all those that gave so much and supporting the community. It's been great to get so many "thank you's" from residents as we have been up ladders - long may it continue. It is especially pleasing to do this year following the passing of Her Majesty".
New Tommies have been installed at the Watford Fields War Memorial and by the Sutton Road Road. After Remembrance Sunday they were taken into safe keeping by the council and stored for next year.
This year a Remembrance service and parade was held at St Mary’s Church to the Peace Hospice Memorial at the Town Hall.
